From 1975-1979 he was employed by Intel Corporation (Senior Software Engineer) and from 1979-1987 he was on the Computer Science faculty of the US Naval Postgraduate School (Asst. Prof., Assoc. Prof., Acting Dept. Chair). Since 1987, he has been an Associate Professor in the Computer Science Department of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where he teaches and conducts research on complex systems and emergent computation, including artificial life, evolution of language, connectionism and field computation.
