The University of California at Berkeley, http://www.berkeley.edu/, is the origin of such "dead-end" technologies as TCP/IP, vi, c shell, BsdOs, Ingres, rogue and, well, tons of other stuff. The X Window System and Emacs were invented somewhere else (The MassachusettsInstituteOfTechnology).  The term

The term ''Cal'' is most commonly used in a sports context, such as "Cal is the underdog against USC next Saturday", referring to a football game.  In academic conversation, people usually say "Berkeley" or maybe "UC Berkeley".
