They have produced software for the non-professional user who is more concerned with making the computer work with ease, and provides a comfortable, usable interface to do that. 

Professionals seem to be mixed in their acceptance of Microsoft and its products, particularly those who run Enterprise software. 

Competitors exist and are challenging Microsoft's former dominance in the marketplace. 

Microsoft's recent strategy seems to be one of accommodation and inclusion, as displayed by recent corporate agreements and the DotNetFramework. Whidbey (Windows2005) is the latest of the products and will likely continue this strategy.
