Discussion and definition of what these are examples of can be found at HeisenBug. ---- Like subatomic particles, the very act of looking for a HeisenBug in a distributed computer network causes it to move to another machine. ---- The specific context was a Smalltalk-80 image on a Unix workstation. We noticed that when we left the Smalltalk image running (with the cursor over one of its windows) unattended for a long time (like an extended lunch) and returned, the system was hung and the screen was filled with a ''huge'' stack of walkbacks. Yet, as soon as the mouse moved, the screen cleared, everything came back to life, and all was well. The problem turned out to be a consequence of an unanticipated interaction between the Unix scheduler and the ST-80 process scheduler. Unix gradually lowers the priority of user processes that appear to be unattended. ST-80 spawned a new (Smalltalk) process on each heartbeat interrupt to check and update the cursor position. Each of these was then terminated (and became garbage) when the update was finished. The Smalltalk VM requires a certain number of cycles in order to actually terminate the completed process, remove it from the stack, and garbage collect it. As the Unix scheduler lowered the priority of the ST-80 system process, it reached a threshold where the Smalltalk VM no longer had enough time to finish terminating the interrupt process before it lost its time-slice. Thus, the Smalltalk stack grew and grew, filled with processes that were about to die (as soon as the VM had a chance to kill them). Eventually, the VM ran out of stack space and began posting walkbacks on each heartbeat interrupt. This eventually paralized the VM, and thus (apparently, although not actually) the whole workstation. Moving the mouse caused the OS to elevate the priority of the ST-80 process. The Smalltalk VM then handily and properly disposed of all the dead Process instances, cleaned up the garbage, and happily resumed normal behavior. An observed problem in such a system can be masked when, in an attempt to isolate it, you switch on assertion monitoring and some side-effect in an assertion function masks the original problem. ---- Some stealth virus writers use these techniques deliberately e.g. using cache covered data to decide a branch. Debuggers tend to change the cache, signalling the virus to get out of Dodge. Most of these techniques were developed as anti-piracy measures. Rather like weapons development in the real world :). ---- I witnessed a HeisenBug back in college. Another team was trying to read a magtape backwards into a buffer (this was a normal operation, nothing weird) and print the buffer. It printed garbage. So they added a dump just before the print to see the status of the program... and it started printing the buffer correctly! Remove the dump, garbage again. Turned out they were using a "read" instead of "read and wait until done" command. Adding the dump took just long enough for the read to finish. ---- Microsoft's Visual C++ initializes unused memory to certain values when you run a debug build inside the debugger. When you run the exactly same executable outside the debugger, the unused memory gets initialized to different values. If your application reads from memory before you write to it, or if you access deallocated memory the program may behave differently inside and outside the debugger. In Microsoft's Foundation Class library, handler routines for UI events are put in a table of function pointers. The construction of this table is hidden behind layers of macros. Some of these macros cast function pointers to be what MFC is expecting, regardless of the function's real signature. If your handler routine has the wrong signature you won't get any compilation warnings. The bizarre symptom of this error is a crash ONLY in release builds, never in debug builds. -- EricRunquist Damn, if only I'd read this page about three weeks ago -- I was having exactly this problem with MFC. I'd changed the handler macro referring to one of my functions, without realising that the new macro wanted the function to take one more argument. In MFC-world, the callee cleans up. The caller was pushing 3 args, the callee was cleaning up 2. The stack went haywire, and the wheels fell off, in such a way that (even with debug information turned on, but optimisations turned off) the stack trace was worthless. This only occurred in a release build, as EricRunquist says. I'd resigned myself to a day binary-chopping through my changes of the previous day to find the point at which I broke it, when I decided to compile the application with a newer version of Visual C++ (we're still using VC6 for our projects, but we've got VC7 installed on a couple of boxes). It turns out that the new version of MFC no longer uses C-style casts; it now uses static_cast. This caused a compile error, pointing me directly at the source of the problem.
