Herbert A. Simon, an American polymath, winner of the Nobel in economics for a new theory of decision-making, ACM's A.M. TuringAward for pioneering the idea that computers can exhibit ArtificialIntelligence that mirrors human thinking. He died Feb. 9, 2001 at the age of 84. Dr. Simon was the Richard King Mellon University Professor of Computer Science and Psychology at Carnegie Mellon -- a title that underscored the breadth of his interests and learning.
