* According to his 1996 autobiography he lost the middle finger of his right hand to German fire during the D-Day invasion of France. "Stunt Double" hands are used in close-ups.

* He was given an honorary Degree in Engineering by the Milwaukee School of Engineering where apparently half of the students polled said they were inspired to study engineering by his role in "Star Trek" (1966)

* He died on July 20 2005, the anniversary of the first landing on the moon. He had been suffering for some time, having been diagnosed in 2004 with Alzheimer's.
