In software design, when you find yourself feeling particularly proud of a neat little bit of design or code, stop and ask yourself how someone who didn't give birth to it will regard it. If it turns out to be overwrought or too slick for the need, you should probably kill your darling and replace it with an ordinary solution that others can actually use, and not just marvel at. It's one thing to be proud of something and then delete it because there are good reasons to do without it and your pride is no reason to keep it in. It's something else altogether to delete code ''because'' you are proud of it. If I had to do that then I'd have to delete ''entire programs'' which I am really really proud of, despite the fact that they are quite useful. I'd amend this advice to say, "KillYourDarlings - if necessary." -- BlueHat ''You can always misconstrue good advice if you really want to.'' -- BlueHat The implication of KillYourDarlings is that you develop an emotional attachment to your clever piece of code (being proud of it), which then influences your judgement about it. So you must force yourself to look at your clever creation objectively. Is it hard to maintain? Is it more complicated than necessary? Almost by definition, the answer is "yes" - a simpler, not-clever solution probably exists. For the sake of future maintenance, DoTheSimplestThingThatCouldPossiblyWork. ---- The reason your darling must die is because you ''think'' its good. Quality isn't a matter of opinion. ''Prove'' that it is reliable and useful: TestEverythingThatCouldPossiblyBreak. ''How do you prove a darling is reliable and useful after you kill it?'' The act of killing is itself a proof by negation. If nobody misses it after its gone, then it wasn't useful. It probably didn't work either. When I saw this page, I immediately thought of people I've worked with arguing not to drop features, who cited the fact that they'd spent a lot of time working on those features as a reason not to drop them. I think that, too, is in the spirit of this guideline. To me, KillYourDarlings is a deliberate overstatement - it's not meant to encourage you to blindly delete code you like, it's meant to encourage you to be reasonable and objective in reviewing your code, and perhaps to try that little bit harder to be extra objective about code you know you're intrinsically biased towards. I think this is a good general principle and should be applied in other walks of life, not just in programming. ---- A problem is that this advice is a HeuristicRule, but it's assumed to be right 100% of the time. Oh I sure it can be made/interpreted to be right 100% of the time. Just extend its meaning suitably. The problem rather is that this is probably not what you want. I understand that it is a good principle to DistrustYourDarlings, which inately implies that it should be tested but ... killing does not convey this message. My darlings are almost always neat functions that adhere to the OnceAndOnlyOnce principle. I am proud of them because I thought of them early not after replicating code 50 times then now having to go through and replace copy pasted code with a maintainable function.
