Our existing command and control systems have extreme scaling problems. That's why there are no million-processor transputers. We build supercomputers with thousands of processors because we haven't got the foggiest about how to design systems that are any more interconnected than that. The CombinatorialExplosion kills VonNeumannArchitecture every time. * Navigating by touch. We're not even good enough at building vehicles that navigate by vision to be able to design automated passenger vehicles. The putative nanobots won't be able to see anything because they're too small to be able to mount cameras or lenses. * Communicating via molecular signals. We're way below the scale of being able to communicate with any kind of E-M signal. The only way we can get nanobots to talk is either by getting 'em into direct physical contact with each other - not easy on these scales when they can't even see each other! - or by having them leave molecular traces/rearrangements like ants do. But there's going to have to be a heck of a lot of those traces floating around in the nanobot's environment for it to actually bump into one of 'em ... * Navigating in 3 dimensions. We're not talking about some nice open airy space where you can just strap on the wings and do loop-de-loops. It's more like a permanent rotating shitstorm in there. Sticky molecules of all kinds are constantly banging into you and each other. You can't see, and you get no signals from the outside to orient you. Actually moving, intentionally, from one place to another on the nano-scale is a nightmare. * Others? (Should I copy the list from http://www.mitre.org/tech/nanotech/ten_challenges.html to here? The point is we're not going to solve these problems overnight. And until we do, all those EnginesOfCreation scenarios Drexler dreamed up are completely unrealistic. Nanomanipulators are going to look more like trees with tinier twigs on tinier twigs until you get down to the nanoscale - all connected back to some big humming machine on our scale - than any kind of free-floating submersible nanobots you can tell to go increase ATP production in mitochondria #345,678,901,322 through #345,799,999,999. Physically the nanobots are possible. In engineering terms, however, it'll take thousands of years, if ever, for us to build 'em based on modern software engineering techniques. Another proposed method: photons. Single molecules in the human eye are sensitive to red photons. Other single molecules in the human eye are sensitive to green photons. Give each nanobot a few of these molecules, and broadcast messages to it by blinking large red and green lights. That's all the communication you need for some kinds of nanobots.
