Some people want an organization to have a single CodingStandard. Vendors push their own proprietary standards. Many altruists want to follow a global standard. 

All that's usually necessary, however, is that a project follow and evolve one standard, it's own. The more it does this, the easier it is for its developers to experience CollectiveOwnership of their codebase.
