I've always held firm in my belief that FormalMethods compliments UnitTest''''''ing; folks who argue one approach over the other to the point of exclusion simply hold no credibility for me. They may be right, but I just don't feel comfortable trusting one to the exclusion of the other. As an empiricist, I find unit testing more approachable and faster to implement, so I tend to lean towards unit testing. But, it would be a lie to assume I pay no attention at all to formality. I am not smart enough to understand FormalMethods fully, but I can see how they may be useful, and why they should be used. In an effort to improve my own code quality, I've explored the various methods (to the best of my ability, that is) in which unit testing and formal methods can be used together in projects. However, it wasn't until I learned HaskellLanguage that everything fell into place. That was the first time I had a full appreciation of how formal methods can play with unit testing. Maybe this isn't completely formal. I apologize if it's not. I think that the principles I've stumbled upon, however, can apply to more formal techniques. For this reason, I've named this page QuasiFormalMethods. Suggestions for better names welcome. I hope to illustrate this via Gunnar's BubbleSort example (see ProofAnnotationsForBubbleSort). ---- Let's assume that we already have the bubble sort implementation written, and our job is to write unit tests to cover it, optionally refactoring it as appropriate. To make my life easier, I'm going to assume C, and my unit tests will be written using an upcoming release of my CUT testing suite. Since it only swaps two elements of an array, we can treat it (for our purposes) as returning a new array with the two elements transposed. In pseudo-Haskell: -- Given these functions... setElement :: Array Int -> Index -> Int -> Array Int element :: Array Int -> Index -> Int swapElements :: Array Int -> Index -> Index -> Array Int swapElements a x y = setElement a' y (element a x) where a' = setElement a x (element a y) It ought to be pretty obvious at this point that our indices must fit within the bounds of the array. Additionally, we see the result of one setElement is fed as input to another -- the intermediate array a' is consumed as quickly as it's created. Thus, in-place array updates in the implementation code proves safe, since nobody else has a chance to use any intermediate results, at least within the context of the swap function. The use of the temporary variable z seems justified since the definition of swapElements references (element a x), even when working with array a'. One property of the function is that if x = y, nothing happens. If x = y, then (element a x) = (element a y). Thus: swapElements a x y = setElement (setElement a x (element a y)) y (element a x) = setElement (setElement a x n) y m = setElement (setElement a x n) x m -- since x = y = setElement (setElement a x n) x n -- since (element a x) = (element a y) = setElement a x n -- setting element x of array a with element x of array a is idempotent = a -- ditto Thus, we can test this in a unit test. That being said, I'm reasonably happy with my analysis that swapElements() works as intended. The if statement forms the next outer scope. It seems dedicated to the task of ''conditionally'' swapping elements. It depends on our swapElements function above, so we can write this as follows, again in pseudo-Haskell: conditionallySwap :: Array Int -> Index -> Index -> Array Int conditionallySwap a x y = if (element a x) > (element a y) then swapElements a x y else a Once again, the indices must be valid for this definition to make sense. We've already established that swapElements works as intended courtesy of the above unit tests, so unit testing this code should be fairly easy. In this case, we have a decision to make, with one of two consequences. Thus, we need at least two unit tests to provide 100% code coverage. The next outer scope will provide a greater challenge, however, as it involves looping. Having proven our ability to conditionally swap, we should tackle the inner loop inductively. Solving the inequality for start, we get start < (len a) - 1. The conditional checks for this condition via the passed parameter limit; limit must therefore equal (len a) - 1, at least to start with. Hence, we need at least two unit tests -- one for valid indices, and one for out of bounds indicies. As transcribed from the original source, everything starts by bubbling elements from index 0 to index N, where N is some value less than the length of the current subset of the array. This will fail, hopefully trivially to the reader, as as we've seen and proven from floatFrom's unit tests, bubbling stops as soon as we find two elements in partial order with each other. Thus, what we ''really'' want is to sort from the far-end down, like this: bubblesort :: Array Int -> Array Int bubblesort a = bubbleFrom ((len a) - 1) a bubbleFrom start a = if start >= 0 then then bubbleFrom (start - 1) (floatFrom start a limit) else a I'm actually getting hand cramps from typing so much, so I'll leave it as an exercise to the reader to fill in where to go from here. I think you see how I combine quasi-formal analysis with unit testing to produce greater confidence in code. Now, extend the above techniques to ''authoring'' software. First, start out by writing code in pseudo-Haskell. Examine the code you've written for useful properties, and write them out too. Codify these properties in unit tests. Transcribe all the pseudo-Haskell back into your imperative language of choice. Also most annotations could be infereed automatically with a modern prover.
