We are supposed to DefineConstantsInInterfaces. It just gives you some namespace flexibility. To get at the implementation of such a class, you can delegate to an object of that class or extend the class. There's no One True Direction to refactoring: sometimes you break things up, sometimes you put things together; sometimes you replace a branch with subclassing, sometimes you replace subclassing with a branch. Which refactoring moves you should make depends on where you want to go. Right before you add a feature, you want to make things a little more general. Right after you add a feature, you want to get rid of redundancy, and to make the code easier to understand. In the actual case above, it's hard to see why you'd want to replace a simple use of the contstants if (aHeading == NORTH || aHeading == SOUTH) with a pretty skimpy new subclass. Among other problems, it's nowhere near as clear to me (and I think to most other people). (This is actually a very simple case of delegation (to a String); in general, you can use delegation instead of multiple inheritance.) And if I didn't think that, I wouldn't do it. Refactoring is a game. The refactorings are like the legal moves in chess: it helps to know them, but none of them are mandatory, and knowing them isn't the same as being a good chess player.
