A stimulus response network that they use in those LittleRobotInsects and Cog, the HumanoidRobot.  This is one of those convenient ways to have EmergentBehavior come from simple preprogrammed pathways.  SubsumptionNetwork topology is also good for breaking down complex behavior into simpler stimulus-response patterns.
