''values of β may give rise to dom!'' -- unknown printout that inspired a UNIX error message.

Supposedly the exclamation point indicated an interrupted printout, and so it could have had an innocent original message like 'varying values of β may give rise to domain errors,' or something like that.  Still, it just seems spooky!  What is 'dom'?!
