Yeah, yeah, I know: the whole modern GUI, WimpInterface was prototyped in Smalltalk at XeroxParc. But, IvanSutherland didn't use Smalltalk for SketchPad, did he? ''Hmmm??? SketchPad: 1962. Smalltalk: 1972. So no, naturally Sutherland didn't use a language that wasn't invented for another ten years.'' Many projects listed are from the last millennium, and many listed firms no longer exist.]'' Compared to other languages: * The CeeLanguage and related languages have given us the UnixOperatingSystem, GNU, LINUX, Mosaic, Netscape, AmigaDOS, Win32, all the database engines, the Internet and GNOME. Mathematica was written in C heavily extended with certain object-oriented-ish programming conventions implemented as preprocessor macros. * The LispLanguage has given us the EmacsEditor (originally written in TECO and since moved to C, but the Emacs system is primarily the hundreds of megabytes of extensions written in elisp) and various math packages like MACSYMA. * The JavaLanguage has given us all those little annoying web widgets ''("JigglingBaloney")''. Java is big and growing very fast on the server side. Most-to-all large scale e-commerce sites are largely written in Java. * C++ has given us gprof, many telephone switches, MicrosoftOffice and most other Windows programs, the KDE desktop and most KDE applications, and the JikesCompiler. Mentor graphics CAD programs changed from C to C++ in the 90s. Many users during this transition assert that quality declined drastically with the first C++ products. Perhaps quality improved as what JohnLakos describes was learned. * The PrologLanguage gave us Quintus, the most hated issue tracking system in history. * Borland's QuattroPro spreadsheet (later sold to Corel) was written in Pascal (later reworked for Delphi). But, I don't know of any widely Smalltalk program. Maybe it's just secret, or maybe Smalltalk is used mainly in custom applications. Much is made of the Chrysler C3 project, but from what I have heard that has been discontinued. Oh, yeah: Smalltalk gave us the user interface for Tektronix 'scopes and logic analyzers. OOCL rewrote there entire mainframe system in Gemstone and VW. The list is actually quite long. It was new development that was stopped, not the payroll program.'' Our Smalltalk application is handling over 70,000 paychecks at the moment, that will be 200,000 within a few years due to winning deals with new customers. It's not in maintenance mode. (I do not work for C3.) ---- My understanding is that Smalltalk's hit was with the business community in the early 90's as a client/server programming language. It continues in this role today, though at a lesser rate. Many telco's use Smalltalk to some degree for logistics or backoffice systems... Manufacturing companies (Texas Instruments, Celestica) use it as well. I believe it is still in use for large logistical operations (FedEx has a distributed smalltalk system, as does OOCL). That's not lines of code, but it matters more.'' By the way, as a mass market oriented computer guy, I would not say that Java is dead. InternationalBusinessMachines is pumping Java for as much as it is worth. I guess that's business programming, but the upshot is that on a significant fraction of webpages, if you don't have Java you can't see them or place orders. '''That''' impacts the mass market. The other big thing is that Java has standard support for multithreading. Multithreaded CPUs are standard. Java is the most widely available portable way to program such CPUs. C++ has no multithreading standard, and no sign of one. Microsoft's threads may suffice, but does nothing for LINUX. ---- All of the reports of Smalltalk use seem to be in the custom software arena, typically in business applications. That isn't my field directly, but my impression as somebody who has sold computers into those fields is that business applications overall are not very performance sensitive (except for large databases, which are usually programmed in C or C++). It seems that business applications require more flexibility, maintainability, and the ability to go in and change the business logic. Performance matters, but only as a cost reduction: if the code runs faster, you need to buy fewer computers. It is not a make or break issue, compared to the performance sensitive programming problems I am familiar with. (Real time options trading, possibly, but that field seems to be dominated by specialized languages like J and K.) Q: is this an accurate perception? Are there any examples of Smalltalk used in performance sensitive domains? A: Smalltalk is not very efficient of CPU time. But most systems do not have the CPU as a bottleneck. The database or the network might be the bottleneck, in which case it isn't important for the programming language to optimize the CPU as long as it lets you optimize disk access or network traffic. Even when the CPU is a bottleneck, most of the time might be spent in a few library routines. This is often true of 3D graphics, which is why the Smalltalk package Jun is pretty reasonable. ---- Are there any examples of Smalltalk used in performance sensitive domains? Yes. JWARS has a 1000-1 runtime requirement; we must be able to simulate one day in about 90 seconds. This seems to confirm that most Smalltalk applications are custom, or at least obscure.
