Doug Pollack was Vice President of Marketing at ParcPlace Systems, Inc. during the ascendency of Java.  He left ParcPlace to become Vice President of Marketing at GemStone Systems, Inc.  His tenure at GemStone has seen the ascendancy of competing application servers from BEA and IBM.
