Links between files owned by disparate applications is what COM, SOM etc give us. A distinguishing feature of Wiki is that the content is essentially text, and adding the links disrupts the content. That's fine for Wiki but I don't see why I'd want a whole OS built that way. I guess this depends on the UserStories, so here are a couple for a "data storage system": * I want to be able to store and retrieve arbitrary data * I want to be able to categorize my data in several orthogonal categories. * I want to be able to efficiently search for data based on the contents. * I want automatic versioning. * I don't want my data to be corrupted when power goes out. * I want to be able to treat remote data in the same way as local data. I like to sort files by modification date in folder organized file systems. You can make ls sort by time, for example. I like the idea of moving pages between Wikis by affinity. On the other hand, I thought a DistributedWiki would be organized by topic, so my UserStory goes like this: I read Wiki and often want to look up java elements. A good place for this would be the JavaDocs. So, i go to my Wiki preferences, check the boxes with: * x links from Wiki * x links from JavaDocs And after this, I get all words from the Wiki pages and the classes from JavaDocs like BufferedInputStream as links. -- PeterSchaefer
